Scout Talk (Glossary)
A handy guide to the common terms, sections, and roles you'll encounter in the Scouting movement.
Common Scouting Terms
- Joey Scouts (5-8): Meet weekly as a Unit; attend Kangaree. Peak award: Joey Scout Challenge Award.
- Cub Scouts (8-11): Meet as a Unit in Patrols; attend Cuboree. Peak award: Grey Wolf Award.
- Scouts (11-15): Meet as a Unit in Patrols; attend Jamboree. Peak award: Australian Scout Award.
- Venturer Scouts (14-18): Self-managed Units; attend Ventures and Moots. Peak award: King’s Scout Award.
- Rover Scouts (18-26): Independent young adults; run their own program. Peak award: Baden-Powell Scout Award.
- Patrol: A small team of 4-8 youth members who work together.
- Unit Council: The leadership group that plans the program for the Section.
- Group Leader: The volunteer manager of the entire Bundoora Scout Group.
- Group Support Committee: Parents who support Bundoora Scouts with property, finance, and gear.
- Woggle: The ring that holds the Scout scarf together.
- Jamboree: A massive gathering of Scouts (usually 11-15 year olds) from all over the country or world.
- Cuboree: A state-wide camp specifically for Cub Scouts.
