An early start, red dirt, and some very good views
Sunday 5 July 2026 started very early for our Uluru expedition crew.
We were up before the sun and headed out for a camel ride. It was cold, quiet, and still a little dark when we arrived, but everyone was keen once they met the camels. Some Scouts were excited, some were a bit unsure, and a few leaders were probably the same.
Once we were moving, the group settled in and enjoyed the ride along the red dirt track. It was a different way to see the country around us, and it gave everyone a good story to take home. There were plenty of laughs, especially when the camels stood up and sat back down.
After breakfast we visited Uluru. Seeing it up close was a big moment for the group. We talked about why this place is important and made sure we treated it with respect. The Scouts noticed the colours, the shapes in the rock, the plants, and how much the rock changes as you move around it.
Later in the day we also saw Kata Tjuṯa. The domes looked huge against the cloudy sky, and the red rock and green plants made the whole place feel very different from home. It was another reminder of how special this part of Australia is.
It was a full day, but a very good one. Early starts are not always easy, but today was worth it.
